COMmon Read is returning in August 2022!
College of Marin Library and Umoja are partnering for a year-long anti-racism, anti-censorship festival focused on The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story. The library is purchasing copies of the book to be used by faculty to teach and to be given out freely to students across the college.
As legislators across the country attempt to ban this book (Texas and Florida have already banned it), Umoja and the library encourage everyone at College of Marin to read it in part to consider the argument it contains and in part as an act of resistance. Why this book? Why now? Our democracy is in critical danger due to hate and disinformation. Everyone at COM is invited to take action this year. We are asking you to think about the history of the United States, and specifically about the role that slavery and anti-black hatred have played in our history. Also:
- To celebrate the struggle for democracy over authoritarianism
- To enjoy being together as a college – students, faculty, staff and administration
- To engage in discussions across disciplines, generations, and political viewpoints
- To study the American past and present
